Creating and editing your entries

1. How to create an entry

  • To create a new entry, tap the ‘Add Entry’ icon (red plus sign) from the bottom tab bar.
  • In the new entry form, enter a title and text (these fields are required).
  • Below the entry text field, you can set the date, time, location, journal title, privacy lock, entry category and location rating. You can also take or import up to three photos per entry.
  • When you are finished, tap the ‘Save’ button at the bottom of the form.
  • Select if you want to ‘Publish’ your entry, or ‘Save as draft.’ Don’t worry about perfecting your journal entries -- you can always edit an entry later -- so just go ahead and enjoy the moment.

Please note: our app supports mentions, which means that when you address another Bonjournal user with ‘@username,’ that user will receive a notification that you’ve mentioned him/her in an entry or comment.

Unlike other apps that emphasize storytelling through images, Bonjournal shifts the focus to your words. Through our own travels, we’ve often found that many memories were not captured in photos. So while photos are optional, a title and text are required in order for you to save your entry.

2. Why is there a limit of three photos per entry?

We’re focused on creating a minimalist journaling experience -- which is why there are limits of post length, two entries per hour, and three photos per entry. Another motivation for these limits is to encourage our users to self-curate. At the same time, we understand that some users might want to post more often, or include more than three photos with their posts, so we may increase these limits in the future. For now, we suggest creating multiple entries if you want to include more photos or text.

3. How to set an entry location

  • Make sure that location services are turned on for the Bonjournal app: iPhone Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Bonjournal > While Using the App.
  • Tap the ‘Add Entry’ icon (red plus sign) from the bottom tab bar to create a new entry.
  • In the entry form screen, tap on the location button located below the date/time button.
  • Select your location from the nearby results.
  • Or, to find a specific location, enter the location name in the first field.
  • Tap the ‘Next’ button on your keyboard, then enter the city name (optional). Please note: you must enter a city in the second field if you’re searching to a place that is not nearby.
  • Tap the ‘Search’ button on your keyboard.
  • Select your location from the search results.

4. How to create a custom location

  • To create a custom location, enter the location name in the first field.
  • Tap the ‘Next’ button, followed by the ‘Search’ button on your keyboard.
  • Select ‘Use custom location as my location’ at the top of the search results.

5. How to create a private entry

A private entry is only visible to you; even if someone has the URL link to the entry, he/she cannot access it.

  • To make an entry private, simply tap on the privacy lock button while you’re creating or editing an entry. Tap again to turn privacy off.
  • A lock icon to the right of your published entry indicates that it is private.

6. What is a location rating?

You have the option to assign ratings to the places you explore, including cafes, bars, hotels, shops, attractions, etc. Ratings help make your experiences more accessible to your friends and followers, especially when they’re referring to your journals while trip planning. If they’re not your thing, or if a location rating is not applicable, simply leave the rating field in the entry form blank.

7. What is the difference between a published versus a draft entry?

When you save an entry, you have the option to publish or save it as a draft. A published entry is immediately posted and accessible to your friends and the public (unless the privacy lock is on). A draft entry, indicated by the pencil icon to the right of your published entry, can only be viewed by you. Drafts can be easily updated by tapping on the pencil icon.

Please note: even after you publish any entry, you can always edit it later.

8. Can I create entries while offline?

With our iOS app, you can write offline entries as long as you’re logged into the app before you go off the grid. Once internet connection is resumed, open the app and pull to refresh. This will trigger the app to sync your offline entries for safekeeping.

9. How to edit an entry

  • Select ‘Edit entry’ to view and edit the entry form.

  • Tap the ‘Post’ button to submit.

Please note: our app supports mentions, which means that when you address another Bonjournal user with ‘@username,’ that user will receive a notification that you’ve mentioned him/her in an entry or comment.

Creating and editing your journals

1. How are journals organized?

Journals keep your experiences grouped into separate trips, events, locations, or categories. While Bonjournal was built to capture travel memories, our users are documenting a wide variety of experiences, including their baby milestones, home remodeling, marathon training, and more. With our simple and clean format, the possibilities are endless! For inspiration, check out our Featured Journals.

A journal consists of a collection of pages; each page corresponds to a single day. A journal page may contain multiple entries, which are sorted by timestamp. The Contents list displays all of the pages (in bold) and entries (in italics) found in your journal.

On your Home screen, your journals are displayed in the order of your most recent entry -- the journal with the latest entry will appear at the top of your feed. Your Home feed updates every time you add a new entry to a journal.

2. How to create a new journal

A default journal, titled ‘My First Journal,’ is automatically created when you sign up. If you’d like to rename this journal or add a cover photo, you can easily edit the journal.

  • To create a new journal, tap the ‘Add Entry’ icon (red plus sign) from the bottom tab bar.
  • In the new entry form, enter a title and text.
  • Tap on the ‘Add to...’ button below the location button.
  • Enter a new journal title in the first field.

  • To view a journal, tap on its journal cover.
  • From the Contents list, you can either select a specific page you’d like to read, or swipe to the left to start from the first page.

7. How to create and share a private journal

A journal is only private if all of the entries within that journal are private. This means that you must individually turn on the privacy lock for each entry. A private journal is only visible to you; even if someone has the URL link to the journal, he/she cannot access it.

The only way to share a private journal is to first export to PDF, save the PDF to your device, then email the PDF to your friends. We value your privacy, and want it to be just that.

8. What is a journal map?
